Binding Shadows by Jasmine Silvera

Book 1 in the Tooth & Spell series

Available now

This book has all of my favorite elements-witches, magic, shifters, and mysterious old books that want to create havoc. Now, add in an old university library set in a world run by Necromancers, a dusty old bookstore, and a hot, steamy romance, and you have the recipe for a perfect afternoon read.

Barbara has worked hard to pursue her goal of a doctoral degree in preservation and conservation, but an incident at a work party has left her at the mercy of the sexist and misogynist department heads. When Tobias Vogel joins the University as a visiting professor, his demanding research requests prove too difficult for everyone except for Barbara. When a mysterious journal written in code ends up in the hands of Tobias, Barbara’s gift allows her to easily break the code. In a desperate attempt to hide her magical gift, she uses her research skills to find materials that will lead Tobias on the right path to solving the riddle for himself. As Tobias finds himself becoming more and more intrigued by Barabar’s skill and intelligence, a tragic event places them in a compromising position seen by a fellow University employee.

Adding to Barbara’s already stressful life, a mysterious book of spells has come into her possession and is wreaking havoc on Barbara’s magic.

Secrets! Everyone in this book has a secret. Their secrets have secrets! So many secrets. Barbara has always known she has a magical ability but never the scope of her powers. She was raised to use her gift often but entirely in secret. In their world, the Necromancers rule over all and anyone or anything with a hint of magical ability will disappear. Tobias has fought his wolf side for as long as he can remember. Unwilling to pass on his genes, Tobias has never pursued relationships and is struggling to balance his feelings for Barbara and his need to keep his own secret identity. Barbara has this beautiful relationship with the woman who owns her building and the bookshop where Barbara works part time and guess what? She has BIG secrets. One small spoiler:

You can still scroll past.

Spoiler- Barbara has the ability to find the exact book that she wants using her magic! How cool is that? I work in a Library and I can’t imagine how much easier it would be to find all those missing and misshelved books if you could just wiggle your fingers and they glowed. Amazing. I loved this power!

Jasmine Silvera did an excellent job of weaving together all of these seemingly disparate characters to create a magical story of family, loyalty, and dark secrets. It was such an interesting puzzle of mysterious books, magical gifts, secrets, and interesting characters. This is a wonderful book and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this world. This is set in the same world as Death’s Dancer, which I also read and loved, so definitely check that series out as well.
